ABC Learning Expression of Interest process
An Expression of Interest process has commenced and encouraged parties to register their interest in the future of ABC Learning centres with the receiver. A number of organisations have already contacted the receiver, and others have contacted various arms of Government, with a view to expressing their interest in potentially buying or otherwise operating individual, or several ABC Learning Centres. Showcasing New Practices in E-Learning
There is still time to register for the 2005 Australian Flexible Learning Framework's event to showcase the latest innovations in e-learning, to be held in Melbourne on Thursday 1 December 2005. The 2005 Framework's New Practices in Flexible Learning Project funded six projects this year to implement innovative practices with a focus on e-learning, e-business, online student support and self service. Each project will outline their 'new practice' and outcomes achieved.

Trialling New Learning Technologies at QUT
QUT may soon be able to shrink the typical uni student's 5kg+ backpack into a 150g iPod and turn the pesky mobile into teachers' pet learning device. These are just two uses of the ubiquitous personal communication devices used daily by students being trialled or researched for their teaching potential by Queensland University of Technology's Teaching and Learning Support Services (TALSS) in collaboration with a number of faculty partners. Mobile phones, iPods, PDAs, tablet PCs and laptops abound on campus and students were demanding the ability to use them to support their study.

European Union/Australia Cooperation in Higher Education and VET Projects
This fourth joint call by the European Union and Australia is for proposals for multi-lateral projects with the potential to serve as a model for future substantive and long-lasting structural EU/Australian cooperation in both higher education and Vocational Education and Training (VET). This call also seeks proposals for complementary activities to investigate policy-oriented issues of interest to higher education and / or VET in the EU and Australia. $370 Million for New Research Projects
Australia's investment in research has been further enhanced with the announcement that another 1214 new research projects are to be funded by the Australian Government over the next five years. $370 million has been allocated to fund these projects, which are awarded following a rigorous peer review process and with the advice of the Australian Research Council (ARC).

New Apprenticeship Roundtable
The New Apprentices Roundtable provides an opportunity for New Apprentices around the country to present their ideas to the Australian Government. The recent second meeting of the Roundtable included 18 current and recently graduated New Apprentices from industries or occupations where labour supply needs have been identified, particularly those in the traditional trades. Members will meet again twice in 2006.

2005 Science and Innovation Awards Winners
The 2005 Science and Innovation Awards for Young People in Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, enhance the use and recognition of science, innovation and technology in our rural industries, and further the careers of Australia's young scientists. Advancing Distributed Learning Through Global Collaboration
An important turning point in terms of furthering advanced distributed learning technologies through international collaboration was reached at the international Advanced Distributed Learning Forum in Melbourne, sponsored by the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) and the U.S. Department of Defense Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative. The result was the Melbourne Declaration aimed at maintaining further international advancement, development and deployment of advanced learning technology intitiatives.

Going to Uni Website Helps Students
The Going to Uni website is a comprehensive online guide designed to inform current and prospective students and their families about the options and financial support available for university study. The website has been recently enhanced to include the first national online, searchable database of higher education courses offered by Australian universities and other providers of higher education. Students can use the Course Information system to compare course fees, cut-off scores and other information across all universities and other higher education providers in Australia. For the first time, students can log on to one site and find out all the courses available to them and approximate first year costs for the course.

Student Visa Reforms
Student Visa Assessment Levels for a number of countries and education sectors will be reduced from 1 November 2005, providing for more streamlined visa processing. The assessment levels affect countries including: Bahrain, Britain, Chile, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Kuwait, Mauritius, Peru, Seychelles, Singapore, Slovenia, Trinidad & Tobago, United Arab Emirates and the USA. The English language and financial test for student visa applications from these countries and education sectors will be lower as a result of some of the changes.
